Okay, first things first. I am deathly afraid of zombies. I am more scared of zombie movies than poltergeisty movies or ghouls or hauntings. I'm also scared of vampires, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying Angel or Buffy or The Vampire Diaries, but that's another story. So this book was a challenge for me from myself so I could conquer my fear and do it through self-defense, a 2-in-1!
I'm well aware that this is a work of fiction, but Brooks writes in such a confident, non-preachy, snarky manner that it's as if it really.is.happening. Zombies are really around us, and this book just might save your life. From the best weapons of defense, to places of refuge (No to hospitals and government buildings), to lists of things to stock and bring with you, Brooks pretty much has everything covered. I like insights which range from "fire is useful in destroying the virus but could end in you having a zombie torch lunging at you" to "islands are safe since the discussed fictional zombies can't swim --but can survive underwater-- but what if the bitten are wearing life vests and drift to your island/what if other people arrive to loot or are infected?".
At the end of the book are possible scenarios if the world becomes filled with zombies, and obviously the results aren't pretty. There are also pseudo(?)-fictional accounts on zombie attacks all over the globe, which I stopped reading since I got too scared.

I'm still afraid of zombies though, but because of this book I'm considering the purchase of a crowbar, "The handiest tool for destroying zombie's brains through the eye entrance".

What I think: 8 and a half unicorns
